Child Development:

Students learn about the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth of children.

Interior Design I & II:

Students gain the skills and knowledge needed to design spaces.

Culinary I & II/Global Foods:

Students will learn a variety of cooking aspects including food preparation, cooking techniques, and professional kitchen skills.

Fashion I & II:

Students learn how to illustrate clothing and how the principles of design apply to fashion.

Explore FCS:

Explore FCS introduces students to the field of FCS and helps them develop key life skills.

Leadership & Service:

FCCLA members are able to take this class to work on service projects, plan events, and work on competitive events.

Health/Human Development:

Health covers a wide range of topics related to health and wellness.

AAFCS plays a crucial role in FCS by inspiring research, leadership, and service to empower individuals, families, and communities. This organization has assisted in establishing home economics/FCS programs in college and universitites.

Careers you can apply an FCS degree to:


FCS Teacher - Teach middle and high school students various subjects like cooking, nutrition, personal finance, and many more.

College Professor - Teach FCS skills in a college setting.

Teaching:

Psychologist - Assess, diagnose, and treat the psychological problems and the behavioral dysfunctions relating to physical and mental health.

Sociologist - Study human behavior, interaction, and organization and examine the effect of social influences.

Research:

Occupational Therapist - Help people improve their ability to perform daily tasks. Work with patients to develop strategies to help them recover, maintain, or improve their skills.

Child Life Specialist - Help children and families navigate the process of illness, injury, disability, trauma, or hospitalization.

FCCLA Career Clusters

FCCLA members explore career opportunities and build real world skills by developing projects, engaging and participating in events, and competing regionally and nationally for scholarships and awards. Through participation in FCCLA and exploration of FCCLA’s 6 Career Clusters, members acquire many skills to be college and career ready, including academic knowledge, technical expertise, and a set of general, cross-cutting abilities called “employability skills.”

  • The Arts & Design Career Cluster offers careers in fashion, interior design, visual and performing arts, and entertainment. This cluster emphasizes designing apparel for personal and professional needs, crafting functional and inspiring interiors for homes and businesses—including age-in-place living—and creating spaces for industry.

How do FCS and FCCLA relate?

FCS (Family and Consumer Science) classes give students real-world skills that will prepare them for life. Students will develop skills in areas such as culinary arts, fashion and sewing, hospitality, health management, personal finance, and child development. By developing these skills, students are college and career ready.

FCCLA takes the skills you learn in FCS classes and applies them to the real world by competing in competitive events and participating in service projects. Students use the 6 career clusters (see above) to provide college and career readiness.
